About the Program
San Francisco State University is home to a diverse group of students who represent a variety of backgrounds and experiences. As part of the educational program, it will benefit undergraduate students to provide them with a program that supports them in learning about and understanding more on the path to graduate school.
The Mentoring Undergraduate Student Experience (MUSE) program is provided by the Psychology department which educates undergraduates on the experience and opportunities of graduate school and pairs undergraduates with current or recent graduates students to engage in mentoring activities to help understand and guide the process of considering, researching, preparing for, and applying to graduate school.
This program is targeted at Undergraduate students who are seriously interested in learning more about what graduate school is and planning to apply within the next 12 months. This program provides a resource to students who might traditionally be underserved and uninformed in this area (e.g., first generation students).
This program further seeks to provide mentoring opportunities to graduate students to meet with and share their experience with undergraduates about why they chose to go to graduate school, how they selected programs to apply to, what their application experience was like, and any advice they have. Having an opportunity to be a mentor is an invaluable experience to include on a resume or as part of an application which is transferrable to graduate student's future careers.
